My Savior!
One question we don’t need to ask of Mary when we get to heaven is what she thought of herself. It’s clear from her song that she considered herself a servant of God. She also didn’t identify as more holy than others. She identified as a sinner in need of a Savior. In some renditions of the Christmas story, Mary gets exalted. Yet even she would resist those claims. Her situation is just like all of us who were born in a sinful state.
Still, the character of Mary presents to us serval character traits that we should try to adopt. For one, she took the angel Gabriel at his word and believed what she was told. Then, just because she had the Messiah in her womb, she didn’t allow herself to become prideful. She recognized that God didn’t need to choose her and that her role in this story wasn’t because she was more righteous than others. She realized she also had a problem with sin and she needed a Holy God to rescue her.
We should look at the person of Mary today and emulate her humility and her acceptance of God’s Word. Maybe God chose Mary in large part because He knew she would accept His message and keep a humble heart.
Have a great Sunday preparing your heart for the celebration of Christmas!
