He is Merciful and Faithful
Today’s advent reading is the second part of Mary’s Song. The message of this song expresses God’s mercy and his loyal love to His covenant people. Within this young Jewish girl is the long expected Messiah. After 400 years of prophetic silence, now God has chosen to reveal Himself to her. As she reflects on the need for her Savior, she makes a list of how God works in light of his mercy. This coming Messiah is the fulfillment of His covenant from long ago with Abraham. Her song looks forward as she looks back at what God has said.
As we remember the first advent, it reminds us to remember God’s faithfulness in our own lives. Just like Mary could look forward as she looked back, so we can look forward to Christ’s triumphant return. We read the Scriptures to know all about what God has done with his mighty arm, and that gives us assurance to wait patiently for God to fulfill his next promise.
Maybe this will be the year that He comes back! When I think about the imminent fulfillment of His promises, it reminds me to stay faithful to serve and to use my resources for Kingdom purposes. I want Him to find me being a reflection of His mercy to others.
